01.  How do I score silent /e/ rule spelling responses when the /e/ is omitted?


When hand-scoring all short vowel and silent /e/ rule long vowel spelling responses, the P-O-S-E(c) error score is determined by the vowel if it were sounded out by the examiner in General American English (GAE), exactly as spelled, effectively converting an orthographic response to phonology. This permits an aggregation of error responses between Spelling and Reading. Responses to the Reading portion of the P-O-S-E(c) are recorded phonetically.

 

For example, if the target short vowel CVC non-word is RET ( ĕ ) and the student spells the item "RIT", the short vowel substitution error is recorded ( ĭ ), as it would be pronounced as misspelled.

 

If the target silent /e/ rule non-word is VONE ( o )and the student writes "VON", the vowel subsitution error is recorded as the misspelled word would be pronounced in GAE ( ŏ ). In the Silent /e/ column to the right on the scoring form, strike through the /e/ indicating an omission.

02. Do consonant errors count in calculating the P-O-S-E(C) error score?

 

No. Pre- and post vowel consonant errors should be recorded on the P-O-S-E(c) test form in the appropriate boxes. They serve as a future guide for intervention in correcting consonant substitution errors, including b/d, p, g confusions.
